Welcome to the monthly club page of the
SANTA FE RIVER TRAIL RIDERS
ABOUT OUR CLUB:
We are
a local club near High Springs including the Gainesville and Lake City
areas. We welcome all ages and breeds of horses and have several gaited
horses in the club too.
We are friends riding our favorite horses on
trails of: Oleno/River Rise State Preserve,
in High Springs, San Felasco
Hammock State Preserve trails off 441 in Alachua, Mattair Springs
in Suwannee Water Management area in Live Oak, Big Shoals State Park in
White Springs, Goethe State Forest / Black Prong Wildlife Management
area in Dunnellon, and Welaka State Forest near Crescent City. In these, we
try to plan some fun with campouts, cookouts, and full moon rides. Email for directions and times
or questions to Dru Travis, our current president.
A
Bimonthly Newsletter is sent out regularly to members via snail mail or email to
keep everyone posted on rides, meeting discussions, ride news, and

Payment
and Rules for Riding Florida State Parks
Oleno/
River Rise and Florida State parks are payment by entry. From the
Ranger Station located on 41/441 North of High Springs at the State
Park Ranger Station. Cost is – $6.42 per person for a day ride. Horse
Camping (primitive) is $4.36 per person for a total of $10.78
day/overnight. With the exception of buying an Individual Park Permit
Pass for $42.80 . This covers one person and one horse for a year to
the end of the month date of purchase. The Family Pass Park Permit
costs $85.20 and this covers one truck and up to 8 family members with
its occupied trailer. If you buy the permit to use the trails, you need
to call into the ranger station (Oleno 386-454-1853). You give them your
permit number over the phone and number of persons riding and they look
up your number to verify. They will give you the gate combination to
enter River Rise Trails over the phone . Please call in because this
helps the parks keep a count of the facility being used and can better
help us know its being utilized for improvements.
Directions to River Rise from the ranger station: When leaving the Park
Drive take a left. At the stop sign at 41/441 take a left again. Go
about 2 miles to Co. Rd. 778 and turn Right. Go to the end of the road,
about 2 ½ miles to the stop sign, turning left on 27 Go about 5
miles. The River Rise Horse Trails are on the left. If you cross the
Santa Fe River, you went too far. When you enter the gate, please lock
the gate behind you; this is a safely issue. This is a first rate
facility, with 20 horse stalls, which is first come first serve. There is a horse wash
station, a public restroom with shower, water for you horses, plenty of
parking, and nice trails even in the summer. No pets allowed. Park closes at
sunset. It is up to you to make payments or call in before you come to
the rides and meetings. You Must keep a up to date coggins on your
horse in your pocket or saddle bag when riding in state parks. There
are park patrols to check this. I keep a copy in my glove box in my
truck and one in my saddle bag.
If
going
to San Felasco and Big Shoals State Park there is an Honor Box system –
Payment is made at the payment box when entering, by the amount listed
or by your entry permit number, then you pull out a blue envelope and
enter your pass number on the envelope and put it in the pay box. San
Felasco has no water, so bring your own for horses. A pavillion is
being built, with public restrooms. There are some great trails with a
diversity of hills and water to cross. Big Shoals is primitive.
State
Water Management Areas, National Forest and State Forest for riding –
Most only have a trailhead with limited parking, no water, or facilities
so come prepared with your food, hay and water for your
horse, and any emergency attire you might need. Some of the trails are
Mattair Springs, Holton Creek , Little River, Osceola National Forest,
Goethe Track.

HAPPY
TRAILS...
|
Trailtrotters
at State Forests: |
- Carry a current certified copy
of Coggins Test for your horse/horses while on the trail. It is required for
all horses in all Florida State owned property(forests, parks, preserves, recreation
areas, etc.).
- Respect the property of others
(lawns, farm fields, crops, groves, livestock, etc);
stay on marked trails to avoid trampling sensitive vegetation.
- Do not upset your co-riders' horses. Ride at a controlled pace.
Never pass others at a trot or gallop.
- Stay with a dismounted rider.
- Leave gates as you found them:
open gates should remain open, closed gates should remain closed.
- When riding together, stay with your group,
keep a safe distance, don't crowd others. If you are going to lag behind, tell others so
they may be aware of where you are.
- Bring plenty of drinking
water for horse and rider.
- All riders should be
aware of what is going on around them at all times.
- Be courteous to hikers,
bicyclists, and hunters when they are met in the woods.
- Wear ribbons in the tails
of horses for stallions (yellow), biters (blue), and kickers (red).
- Take your time and enjoy
the beauty of our State Forests.
